WINGATE, N.M. — Chinle (5-5, 2-0) beat Page 8-2, 6-5 in a double-header baseball game played at Page High School. The Wildcats scored a slew of runs in the latter innings to get the lead and keep the lead. Starting pitcher Troy Yazzie recorded two RBIs and stole base three times.

The Wingate Bears beat Questa 8-6 in the annual Santa Fe Indian Invitational. Wingate (3-1) came from behind in the sixth inning and recorded four runs to overtake Questa.

Mitchell goes for 28 in loss

SANTA ANA PUEBLO — Tohatchi senior guard Brianna Denetso nailed a 3-pointer with just seconds left in the game but the Lady Cougars couldn’t connect on a subsequent shot and fell to Texico 48-47 in the state 3A girls basketball championship March 9 at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho.

Tohatchi’s 47-46 lead with 13 seconds left in regulation came as a result of a long jumper by Denetso. It was players like Denetso that stepped up to aid the Lady Cougars in getting through the 3A tournament the past several years. Tohatchi won the 3A state championship last year after beating Eunice.

SANTA ANA PUEBLO, N.M. — Tohatchi beat Tularosa 78-43 and advanced to once again play in the New Mexico 3A state girls championship basketball game. The game is March 9 at 1:30 pm at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho.

To get to the championship game, Tohatchi (24-6, 8-0) eliminated Loving 69-51, Dulce 67-45 and Tularosa. The Lady Cougars are led by all-state point guard Kalian Mitchell, who is averaging double figures for the state tournament.
