‘How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World’ makes the cut for genial family entertainment

Based on a series of children’s books, the original How to Train Your Dragon was surprisingly entertaining and effective, following a young Viking who decided to upset societal norms and befriend a dragon instead of slaying it. The second feature took a darker turn, so much so that sections of it distressed younger audience members.

Following a TV series, the third and reportedly final chapter in the series has now arrived. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World is a more genial effort that will certainly please children.

GallupArts challenged 28 local artists to create 15 paintings in 30 days. Called 15 in 30, the challenge was an invitation to local artists to create 15 original, 2D artworks within a 30 day time frame, funded by a grant from New Mexico Arts. Opening night was Feb. 9, when area artists showcased their works, ranging from fabric and pottery to landscapes and portraits.

With Valentine’s Day approaching, it isn’t a surprise to see a new rom-com arriving in theaters. Isn’t It Romantic tries to provide a few new wrinkles to the formula with a lead character who hates the movie genre and all the falsehoods it projects. Of course, the film can’t help but end up repeating some of the elements it attempts to make fun of. Still, thanks to an entertaining lead and the film’s breezy charm, there’s enough amusing material here to earn it a recommendation.
