One man is dead after an alleged parking lot fight at T&R Feed and Rope Center turned deadly Feb. 12.

The suspect, who Sheriff officials declined to name at this time, was arrested on Navajo Nation land thanks to some persistent witnesses.

McKinley County Sheriff’s office responded to the “fight call” at 2:30 pm.

Undersheriff James Maiorano said before deputies arrived on scene they were notified that the Native American male stabbing victim was sitting in a gray pickup truck in the parking lot. When deputies arrived, medical personnel were already tending to the victim.

One man is dead after an alleged parking lot fight at T&R Feed and Rope Center turned deadly Feb. 12.

The suspect, now identified as Nelbert Billy, 20, of Manuelito, N.M., was initially arrested on Navajo Nation land for an unrelated charge. He has since been arrested and charged in McKinley County with one open count of murder.

Chihuahuita due for city council help

By a vote of 5-0, the Gallup City Council decided to spend potential grant funds to restoring roads in the historic neighborhood of Chihuahuita, which has been waiting for help with its water drainage for years.

The funds are from the imminent 2020 Community Development Block Grant funding cycle, and the Gallup City Council discussed the plans at their Jan. 28 meeting.

The Chihuahuita neighborhood, particularly a stretch of Logan Avenue, has dealt with stormwater drainage challenges for years, which has resulted in flooded yards and basements. Residents currently have no means of preventing these issues.
