Gallup receives six finalist nominations in state Top HAT Awards

The City of Gallup announced Oct. 1 it received six finalist nominations for the New Mexico Hospitality Association’s annual Hospitality and Tourism Awards.

The Top HAT Awards celebrate those who have done exceptional work to elevate the travel, tourism and lodging industry in New Mexico. The Gallup finalist nominees include:

Best New Event Finalist: Best in Show Night 2017 sponsored by Emerald Tanner in partnership with Gallup Inter-Tribal Ceremonial and gallupARTS/ART123 Gallery.

Best Print Campaign Finalist: 2018 Gallup Visitors Guide by the Gallup McKinley County Chamber of Commerce, the Gallup Journey, and the City of Gallup Tourism and Marketing Department.

ART123 exhibit features 14 local artists

Stop and smell the metaphorical flowers at gallupARTS Oct. 13 through Nov. 6 with Art All Around Us. The show is composed of works by local artists and held at ART123 Gallery.

An opening reception will be held Oct. 13 from 7-9 pm.

Find the beauty in everyday objects, occurrences, landscapes and city scenes with the help of 40 pieces, ranging from painting to photography to collage to found object assemblage to sculpture to drawing by 14 local artists.

In a city of quaint, adobe-clad architecture, and museums and galleries galore, SITE Santa Fe stands out from the crowd. Open since 1995, the landmark contemporary art organization, broadly known for its distinct and interactive exhibitions, won the prestigious Jeff Harnar architecture award this spring for its striking and creative remodel.

So this is a big year for SITE, and it’s also a big year for Gallup native Eric-Paul Riege, who, like SITE Santa Fe, stands out in his own right as the youngest artist to exhibit in the museum’s 2018 biennial series, Sitelines.2018: Casa Tomada.

‘Venom’ emphasizes bizarre comedy over action

Another week, another superhero movie. At least, that’s what it feels like these days. For some time now, this reviewer has regularly complained about a certain sameness within what has been dubbed the “Marvel Universe.” Admittedly, most are well made movies, but for a time, they have also felt like something coming off an assembly line.

The new flick Venom marks an exception. It’s a very odd duck and one that might even be considered a black sheep in the Marvel cinematic family.
