The 2 pm Ground­breaking Cere­mony on Oct. 25 for the State Veterans Cemetery in Gallup will take place at the originally-planned location: the cemetery site, near the intersection of County Road 43—about a mile after you take Exit 22 from Interstate 40.

Steps have been taken to alleviate concerns about an existing construction project near the site.

The New Mexico  Department of Veterans Services apologizes for any confusion, and invites the public to attend this long-awaited event.

DWI, 1st Offense

McKinley County Sheriff’s Deputy Josie Bowman was dispatched to State Highway 264 near Sagebrush Liquor in reference to a one-vehicle rollover.

At the scene, Deputy Bowman came into contact with the driver 23-year-old Owens. In response to questioning, Owens admitted having her last drink about five hours earlier and readily agreed to a field sobriety test. She claimed that another vehicle had followed her since the turnoff from U.S. Route 491, and then had run her off the road at the accident site, where her car ended up on its roof.

Owens did not pass the FST, but claimed it was because she hadn’t slept all night...

ALBUQUERQUE – Nael Ali, 53, of Albuquerque, N.M., pled guilty Oct. 18, in federal court to violating the Indian Arts and Crafts Act by selling counterfeit Native American-style jewelry out of two retail jewelry stores located in Albuquerque’s Old Town.

Ali entered a guilty plea to two felony charges under a plea agreement that recommends up to 18 months of imprisonment followed by a term of supervised release to be determined by the court.

The case of a statue of the Ten Commandments in Bloomfield came to an end Monday, as the U.S. Supreme Court denied statue supporters’ an appeal to the high court.

The city of Bloomfield was ordered by a federal district court to remove the monument in 2014, citing the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment, which says, “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof.” The Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals upheld that ruling two years later, leaving the city’s final option to push for a U.S. Supreme Court hearing.
