The runners, walkers, and bikers will be out June 5 in Gallup and all over New Mexico, and in fact the country, in honor of and to raise money for Special Olympics as part of the Law Enforcement Torch Run.

Janice, Mark, David and Paul Brown all grew up in Gallup. Today, no matter where they live, three of them remember the fourth with a wreath.

Each year on a Saturday, Wreaths Across America Day is coordinated nationwide with Arlington National Cemetery. It is the day that live wreaths are laid on the graves of veterans.

It’s a job that Janice Bradley took on when she saw a story about the organization on television. Bradley contacted her brothers Paul and David about sponsoring a wreath for their brother Mark Brown, Sgt. E5, who served in the Army in Viet Nam, Korea and Desert Storm.

The Brown family sponsored additional wreaths for veterans in the Santa Fe cemetery.

Roadwork starts on N.M. 602

Roadwork in New Mexico Department of Transportation District Six begins the first week of June on N.M. 602, approximately 8 miles south of Gallup.

The contractor will reduce both directions to one lane of traffic from Mile Marker 23 and 24, near Bread Springs. N. M.

Flag personnel will guide traffic through the work zone. Motorists can expect minor delays.

The speed limit will be reduced for the safety of the crew.

Hours of operation will be from 8 am-6 pm.

NMDOT expects to complete the project by June 18.

Gallup Police seek help from the public

Gallup Police are working to solve a burglary that took place in the early morning hours of Memorial Day (May 31).

GPD is requesting the public's help in locating an adult male who could be involved. His picture can be seen here.

The vehicle he was driving was an all white late model Kia Sedona.

Gallup City Council takes up masks; marijuana

 

The pandemic isn’t quite over, but the end is in sight.  On May 14, the New Mexico Department of Health announced that the state would be adhering to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s updated guidelines that say that individuals who are fully vaccinated no longer have to wear masks.

During the May 25 Gallup City Council meeting, Gallup’s City Attorney Curtis Hayes shared an ordinance that would allow vaccinated Gallup citizens to take off their masks starting July 1. Hayes explained that the city will drop its own ordinance and begin following the New Mexico Department of Health’s rules and regulations.
