President Nez offers solutions to resolve Veterans Trust Fund concerns

WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. – Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez and the Office of the President and Vice President Chief of Staff Paulson Chaco met with the Navajo Nation Veterans Administration on July 6, to continue developing short-term and long-term solutions to resolve a shortfall for the Veterans Trust Fund funding allocation for the upcoming FY2023, which will begin on Oct. 1.

The Navajo Nation Veterans Trust Fund was created in 1998 with an initial investment of $6 million to fund services for Navajo veterans and to reinvest a portion of the Navajo Nation’s revenues into the trust fund to grow the principal. The principal has grown to over $200 million.

Missing elderly man

Jimmy Owens, an 82-year-old man, has been missing since July 17. He was seen near the Economy Motel on the west side of Gallup.

Owens was last seen wearing a a black hat and orange checkered shirt. If you have seen him or know where he is, call Metro Dispatch at (505) 722-2002. Reference case # 22-28689.

Man shot at Champion Ford

A man was shot at the Champion Ford car dealership.

On July 17, at 6:59 pm, Gallup Police Officers were called to Champion Ford, 701 W Coal Avenue, Champion Ford, because a man had been shot. When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered a Native American man laying in the parking lot. They saw that the man had a gunshot wound to his head.

Medical personnel transported the man to the local hospital. He was later flown to UNM Hospital in Albuquerque. The man, who has not yet been identified, is currently listed in critical condition.

Shooting on Rim Rock Drive

On July 17, at 1:45 am, Gallup Police officers were dispatched to the 800 block of Rim Rock Drive because a man had reportedly been shot.

Officers arrived on scene and discovered a male laying in the parking lot of the Red Hills Trailer park office. Officers saw that the male had a gunshot wound to his upper body.  Medical personnel arrived on scene where the male was transported to the local hospital, where he eventually died due to his injuries.
