A surefire crowd-pleaser: ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’

Running Time:

We’ve seen six Spider-Man movies in the past 15 years. That’s six and we’re not even counting his appearance in Marvel’s recent Captain America: Civil War. With two of these films being origin stories, one might be understandably reticent to see yet another take on the character (although based on the people around me at the preview screening, I may be the only who feels a bit burnt out). I can report, however, that Spider-Man: Homecoming is an enjoyable feature and surefire crowd-pleaser that will entertain most viewers.

Perhaps the wisest decision made is to completely forgo the familiar origin story and introduce Peter...

Running Time: 113 min.

It has been a few years since director Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, The World’s End) has treated us to another one of his quirky and idiosyncratic feature films. His latest is an homage to car and heist movies with a modern spin. Admittedly, Baby Driver isn’t as eccentric as his previous efforts. However familiar the path may be, he throws in enough twists and turns to make it a very enjoyable ride.

Baby (Ansel Elgort) is a getaway driver for criminal mastermind Doc (Kevin Spacey), who sends the kid out on a series of wild robberies through the streets of Atlanta. He’s teamed with various...

BIG NEW RELEASES!

Absolutely Anything - It took a long time for this British comedy to make it to US theaters, coming some two years after it release elsewhere. The story involves a group of aliens who arrive on Earth. They decide to experiment on humanity by giving an Average Joe incredible powers and then watch what he does with them. While a few found it enjoyably silly, this effort from Terry Jones of the Monty Python troupe didn’t...

If you’re a big fan of this series of features, then you will be pleased to learn that you’ll get exactly what you were hoping for from the fifth installment, Transformers: The Last Knight. Sadly, this particular reviewer isn’t an enthusiast. Instead, I found that despite the nonstop action and noise, the movie wasn’t particularly exciting. In fact, it had a really difficult time keeping my attention.

As the film begins, viewers are told that there is an ongoing battle between the leftover robots and the human organization known as T.R.F. (Transformers Reaction Force). These well-armed, technologically advanced soldiers are out to...
