A man is facing assault charges after he threatened to fight police officers when they showed up at his front door.

A Standing Rock man, Cophen Largo, 25, was stopped for driving without a working taillight and was eventually arrested and charged with his third DWI.

New Mexico State Police Patrolman Joe Roanhorse pulled over a green Ford Bronco at the intersection of Chino Loop and U.S. Highway 491 and conducted a traffic stop. He approached the passenger window and met the driver, Largo. As he explained the reason for the stop, Roanhorse reportedly saw Largo show signs of intoxication including bloodshot eyes, smelling of alcohol, and slurred speech.

A car accident on Interstate 40 left one person dead and several other people injured Dec. 23.

New Mexico State Police responded to a one-vehicle rollover crash at milepost 68 near Thoreau around 7 am.

According to a NMSP press release, a 25-year-old woman named Ruth Cisneros was traveling westbound in her black Volvo when she allegedly swerved onto the left shoulder and back onto the road before the car flipped and rolled several times. Cisneros was ejected from the car, and the Office of Medical Investigator pronounced her dead at the scene.

Four other passengers, all children ranging from the age of 2 to 7 years old, sustained unspecified injuries and were transported to a hospital...

NMSP participate in C.A.R.E. operation over the Christmas holiday

During the Christmas holiday, the New Mexico State Police participated in the Combined Accident Reduction Effort C.A.R.E. operation across all roadways within the state.  The goal of the traffic initiative is to increase motorist safety and reduce the number of crashes through a strong law enforcement presence.

Because of the increased volume of traffic during the holiday, NMSP increased its patrol presence during this initiative on roadways throughout all State Police districts on the busiest travel days of the Christmas holiday, specifically Dec. 22 through Dec. 26.
