Couple arrested for abusing a baby

A woman called the police after she realized a relative and his girlfriend were allegedly abusing a baby.

On May 12, around 11:38 pm, Gallup Police Officer Matthew Strandy arrived at the Gallup Indian Medical Center, 516 E. Nizhoni Blvd., because the hospital staff had called in a child abuse report regarding an 18-month-old baby boy.

When he got to the hospital, Strandy met with a woman who said Eric Begay and his girlfriend Jessica Haley had abused the infant.

The woman explained that when she got home around 9 pm that night, she heard a loud thud in the children’s room, and she heard the baby begin to cry.

CO arrested for sex with inmate

CIBOLA COUNTY, NM - On May 19, New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau agents were requested by the New Mexico State Police Uniform Bureau to investigate a former Western New Mexico Correctional Facility correctional officer for having sex with a female inmate.

Agents learned that on or about April 26, the New Mexico Department of Corrections Security Threat Investigations Unit (STIU) began an investigation on then CO Robert Smith, 37, of Milan, N.M., for bringing contraband into the prison and giving it to female inmates.  Through investigation, they also learned that Smith had an ongoing relationship and had been engaging in sexual acts with a female inmate.

Man shot dead on Dani Avenue

Gallup Police were called about noon on May 10 to Cliffside Apartments, 602 Dani Dr., because witnesses were saying that a man had been shot.

Officers arrived at the apartments and discovered an unresponsive man laying in the road. The man had at least two gunshot wounds to the torso. Officers administered CPR, however the man was later determined deceased.

Witnesses stated that the suspect(s) fled the scene in a white four-door passenger car.

The victim’s identity will be released once the next of kin is notified.

This is an ongoing investigation. More details will be released as they become available.

Woman allegedly attacked for not taking a shot

A woman was drinking with a man and his sister, and they allegedly decided to physically attack her after she refused to take a shot.

On April 14, around 5:34 pm, Gallup Police Officer Nicole Diswood was dispatched to 102 E. Hill Ave. in Gallup in reference to a domestic dispute.

When she arrived at  the scene, Diswood met with a female victim, who said a man and his sister physically attacked her. The victim said that the man’s  name was Rocoby Wood and his sister’s name is Ashley James. She explained that the three of them had been hanging out drinking at James’ apartment.
