Diné College represented at Minneapolis-based ceremony

TSAILE – A throng of students from Diné College travelled to Minneapolis from March 13-16 for the 2016 American Indian Higher Education Consortium Student Conference and brought back 10 awards – among them six first place honors, the most that students from Diné College have ever won at the annual AIHEC.

The AIHEC is an annual gathering of tribal colleges and universities in the U.S. The conference offers tribal college students the opportunity to attend informational sessions, engage in friendly competition and networking.

Miss Gallup New Mexico Teen Latina crowned

On March 20, El Morro Theatre filled with fans and contestants for the Miss Teen Gallup New Mexico Latina and Miss Gallup New Mexico Latina beauty pageant. The pageant included talent, fantasy dress, and eveningwear categories, followed by the presentation of winners.

Janelle Garciduenas of Gallup won the talent section with her lovely Spanish singing. The best fantasy dress went to Mercedes Mejia of Gallup for her impressive dress constructed of newspaper. Mejia was also the only contestant that did not sing or dance during the talent event.  Instead, she said “My talent is helping people.”

Relay for Life - Team Bengals

There are 15 teams in Gallup participating in Relay for Life, but only one from a school – Team Bengals of Gallup High.

Pam Yardley, who has been a counselor at Gallup High School for 16 years, started a relay team five years ago with a small group of students. The goal is to raise money for the American Cancer Society, who funds research and treatment for the deadly disease.

Relay for Life started in Washington in 1985, and has since spread around the world and has raised nearly $5 billion.

Team Bengals is led by captains Jesus Belleza and Michelle Rascon and includes 15-20 students. In the past two years, they have raised over $8,500 for ACS, and they show no sign of slowing...
