Rodeo to increase number of sponsors, events and contestants

The Gallup City Council discussed the promotion contract and budget for the sixth annual Best of the Best Timed Event Rodeo for 2019 at the Nov. 27 regular meeting.

The 2018 Best of the Best event was held at Red Rock Park June 27-30 and offered seven timed events for the country’s top junior and senior high school rodeo athletes.

Jon DeYoung, assistant city manager, spoke for the contract and budget at the meeting.

Groundbreaking slated for early in the new year

The McKinley County Board of Commissioners discussed and approved the issuance and sale of industrial revenue bonds for the benefit of Rhino Health, LLC at the Nov. 20 regular meeting.

Rhino Health, LLC is a South Korea-based supply company that applied to the county to utilize the shuttered glove factory near Church Rock to produce nitrile gloves of various sizes. The plant was used to manufacture latex gloves before being closed in the early 2000s.

The business will bring in an anticipated 300 to 400 employees.

New rules close gap between outpatient and acute care

SANTA FE – The New Mexico Department of Health announced new regulations and licensing requirements for crisis triage centers, according to a Nov. 27 press release.

This new type of health facility is designed to help individuals who voluntarily admit themselves to stabilize their behavioral health incidents.

Crisis triage centers will provide emergency behavioral health evaluations, as well as outpatient and short-term residential services. This new framework helps close the gap between the needs of patients with outpatient and acute care needs.

Navajo horses, a three-part series

Horses, some branded, others not, were guided into a corral at the Shiprock Fairgrounds on a recent, chilly November morning. Some horses appeared calm and quiet, absorbed in their horsey thoughts, while others were energetic, making their presence known by trotting in the corral and whinnying loudly.

Throughout the day, vehicles pulled up to the corral gates to offload horses they were looking to sell.

Game and Fish director to hear public comments on trapping rule

ALBUQUERQUE – The director of the New Mexico Department of Game and Fish will hold a listening session to hear public comments on proposed changes to the furbearer rule Nov. 27.

Proposed changes include mandatory trapper education, increasing set-back requirements, allowance for closure of areas to trapping, signage and further clarifying the definition of a trail.

The listening session will be conducted 6:30 to 8:30 pm Nov. 27 at the department’s Northwest Regional Office, 7816 Alamo Road NW in Albuquerque.
