Scheduled water outage

A scheduled water outage will take place starting at 9 pm on Sept. 8 and ending at 1 am on Sept. 9.

City of Gallup Water Customers in the following area will be affected; 901, 905, 907, 909, 911, 915 and 950 Coal Ave; 1001, 1003, 1005, 1009 Coal Ave. Surrounding areas may experience low water pressure.

The Water Department will be repairing a broken water hydrant in the area and will need to shut off the water in order to do their work safely.

Cajaun Cleveland crowned Miss Gallup Intertribal Ceremonial Queen

Cajaun Cleveland put a lot of work into preparing for the 100th Gallup Intertribal Ceremonial Queen pageant. Before the competition, she competed in the Navajo Technical University pageant in November and won. Less than a year later, she became the Ceremonial Queen on Aug. 10.

In an interview with the Sun, Cleveland discussed what she had to do to prepare for the Ceremonial Queen pageant. She said she went to ceremonies, talked to people in her community, along with former queens, and overall just tried to become more connected with her culture.

GPD getting more money, pay raises

Gallup’s rank-and-file police officers will get a 5% pay raise with the 2023 fiscal year, following ratification of a new three-year collective bargaining agreement with the city.

The new agreement with the Police Officers Association, which the City Council approved Aug. 23, affects positions in the bargaining unit comprising full-time, non-probationary certified police officers, patrolman first class and sergeants – a total of 38 police officers.  The POA ratified the agreement Aug. 19.

Other changes to the contract include:

Increasing the uniform allowance from $1,000 to $1,200 per year in a lump sum payment starting next August, and the city will discontinue a $7.50 biweekly...

When does outreach go too far?

Call it a draw: The Door Christian Fellowship Church won’t be holding any more events at small neighborhood parks this summer, and the city council plans to revise the city’s event permit ordinance to clarify the rules for future events.

At issue is how large and loud events at neighborhood parks can be. Most of the city’s 15 parks – Bubany, Father Dunston, Golden Age, Hadden, Henrietta, Indian Hills, Mossman, Sky City, Stagecoach and Viro Circle – are neighborhood parks.
