Gallup City Council announces grant awards

The Gallup City Council discussed a number of recommendations for the Lodgers Tax grant for the previous and current fiscal year during their recent regular meeting.

Lodgers Tax funds are taxes drawn from hotel visitors. A committee awards the funds to groups so they have money to advertise and promote their events in order to attract tourists.

The Lodgers Tax Committee met on March 19 to review the applications for the FY19 awards. The committee was told about $81,000 in funding remained, so they offered funding recommendations for the following events:

A car burglary can be upsetting enough on its own, but it became a highly emotional and troubling experience for a Rio Rancho woman.

Artie Ortega and her boss attended the Gallup Gun Show as vendors. The pair stopped for dinner at Cracker Barrel April 5 when her boss’s car, a red 2014 Ford Escape, was broken into in the parking lot.

According to the police report, the burglary occurred about 6:50 pm. The front passenger window was broken, and multiple items were taken.

Part of effort to create quiet zones

The railroad crossings and the creation of possible quiet zones in and around downtown Gallup were front and center at a recent Gallup City Council special meeting.

The council listened to a presentation by the New Mexico Department of Transportation regarding results of a road safety assesment March 28.


Origins of the project

Mayor Jackie McKinney said during the special meeting that the project safety assessment has been in the works for about eight years, and the council is happy to see progress.

Tests kick off the Community Health Fair May 4

GALLUP - Rehoboth McKinley Christian Hospital will offer low cost blood screening tests for cholesterol, triglycerides, HDL/LDL, fasting glucose level and TSH to the public for only $25 from April 8-13 and April 15-20 from 7 am - 9 am, including Saturdays, in the hospital’s main lobby at 1901 Red Rock Drive. Confidential test results can be mailed or picked up at the Community Health Fair on May 4.
