Chilchinbeto community to 'shelter-in-place'

WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. – Navajo Nation President Jonathan Nez and Vice President Myron Lizer were informed by the Navajo Department of Health and Navajo Area IHS March 19, that the total number of positive cases of the COVID-19 coronavirus for members of the Navajo Nation has reached 14.

The majority of the 14 cases involve individuals who initially reported their symptoms to the Kayenta IHS Service Unit, and others who either reported to or were transported to or were treated at Chinle Health Care Facility, and Northern Navajo Medical Center. Rehoboth McKinley Christian Health Care Services has been hard at work preparing for COVID-19 in McKinley County. While there are currently no cases at RMCHCS, Health Officials have confirmed the first community acquired COVID-19 case in McKinley County, a 30-year-old male.

The latest challenge with impact aid

The battle for Impact Aid rears its head throughout the year for many rural New Mexico schools, including Gallup-McKinley County Schools.

The Second Session of the 54th New Mexico Legislature provided a prime opportunity for legislators to combat the effects of large amounts of aid being credited to the state by the federal government and handed out to larger, richer communities.

Senate Bill 198 a key bill pertaining to Impact Aid, awaits a decision in the Senate Education Committee. The GMCS Board of Education thanked local legislators for their efforts in fighting for Impact Aid during the board’s March 9 meeting.
