Gallup Police Officer Richard Rangel said he received a report of a possible drunk driver in the area of East U.S. Highway 66 and Woodrow Avenue.

He drove to the area and found the vehicle and made a traffic stop. The driver, Tso, 27, of Crownpoint, showed signs of being intoxicated. He admitted to Rangel he had three drinks earlier that evening.

He agreed to take the standard field sobriety tests and failed. After he agreed to take a breath alcohol test, he blew two samples of .11 each.

LAS CRUCES – Three people in a vehicle bypassed a Border Patrol checkpoint on the morning of Feb. 27, alerting the Border Patrol, New Mexico State Police, and Dona Ana County Sheriff’s Office.  The three were identified as James Kirkland, 39, of Kingman, Ariz., his wife, and the couple’s 7-year-old son.

The vehicle was traveling on Interstate 25 around milepost 37. Once stopped, Kirkland’s wife ran and Kirkland armed and barricaded himself and his son inside the vehicle.  Kirkland made several statements indicating he was going to kill his son and himself.  He placed the boy between himself and  the officers attempting to negotiate with him.

MCKINLEY COUNTY – New Mexico State Police investigated a fatal crash on New Mexico State Road 371, around milepost 8, north of Thoreau March 6, shortly after 8 am.

According to the initial investigation, a 2012 Mitsubishi Lancer driven by a 28-year-old Albuquerque mother, was traveling south on SR 371. The Mitsubishi drove across the center line into opposing northbound traffic where it clipped a 2013 Nissan Altima’s mirror and then collided almost head-on with a 2005 Toyota 4runner.

Gallup police, FBI searching for bank robber

The Gallup Police and the FBI are looking for Richard Johns Jr., 46, of Gallup, in connection with the robbery of the Washington Federal Bank Feb. 19.

There have been no details released on the bank robbery itself except for a report that no injuries occurred and that it occurred about 12:30 pm. Police said the robber made off with an unspecified amount of money.

Police spent Tuesday evening checking out Gallup motels after receiving a tip that Johns may be staying at one of them.

Johns was reported to be armed and dangerous.
