FBI talks COVID-19 scams, cons

In a Twitter chat May 15, the FBI focused attention on ways scammers operate in the era of COVID-19 and how members of the public can avoid being deceived.

Here are some things to watch out for to keep from being victimized by fraud.

- Ignore offers or advertisements for COVID-19 related vaccines, home test kits, protection, or treatments.

Gallup Police Officer Clarissa Morgan said she was traveling westbound on Interstate 49 when she noticed a brown pickup in her lane driving in the middle of two lanes.

The vehicle then went back to the inner lane before drifting back, causing problems for cars trying to pass him. The truck then started to speed up and then go slow, repeating this sequence a couple of times.

The COVID-19 crisis has caused many organizations and schools to conduct virtual meetings/events, some of which are open to the public. Additionally, links to many virtual events are being shared online, resulting in a lack of vetting of approved participants.

The FBI has released a poster in the Navajo language offering a reward of up to $5,000 for information leading to the identification, arrest, and conviction of the individual(s) responsible for the death of James Naswood.

The poster is the second the FBI has issued in Navajo. In March, the FBI released a poster in Navajo advertising a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the responsible individual(s) in the 2014 homicide of Wilson Chiquito, of Counselor, New Mexico.
