State Police investigate I-40 rollover

Police seeking holder of counterfeit bill

A man entered the Speedway store in Thoreau after 8 pm on Sept. 16, purchased several items, and paid for them with a $100 bill. Sometime after the man left, however, store clerks discovered the bill was counterfeit.

The McKinley County Sheriff’s Department is seeking the public’s assistance in locating and identifying the suspect caught on the store’s security footage.

Eyewitness reports describe the suspect as an Hispanic male, about 5’5” to 5’7” with a stocky build. He is possibly in his late 30s or early 40s, and he had tattoos on both arms.

The investigation is ongoing.

McKinley County Sheriff’s Deputy Eric Jim was on patrol when Metro Dispatch put out an attempt to locate a blue Chevy Silverado, which had been stolen from Red Hills Mobile Home Park about 11 pm.

Jim was traveling northbound on Highway 608 near Gallup Flea Market when a speeding truck pulled up behind him. Both vehicles slowed near the stop light at the intersection of U.S. Highway 491 and Highway 608.

Jim noticed the truck matched the description of the stolen vehicle, so he advised Dispatch he had possibly located the suspect vehicle, which he then began following northbound on Chino Loop towards Gamerco.

NMSP officer shot in an unprovoked attack on I-40

CIBOLA COUNTY — When an officer approached a GMC pickup driven by a Scottsdale, Ariz. man on the morning of Sept. 12, she became the target of 28-year-old Robert Benjamin Nelson.

The New Mexico State Police officer was on patrol on I-40 at milepost 130 near Laguna when she stopped the truck occupied by a single male who appeared to fire multiple rounds at her head.

After being struck, the officer was able to recover and return fire at the suspect.  Nelson was able to flee the scene and continue eastbound on I-40.  Despite having multiple injuries, the officer returned to her vehicle, and pursued Nelson.

McKinley County Sheriff’s Deputy Terence Willie was dispatched to the 9 mile marker of Highway 264 in reference to a fight on the side of the road. The caller had said a rust-colored car had pulled over and two drunk men were fighting.

Willie was traveling westbound on Highway 264 when he was flagged down by another driver, who said she had seen a purple vehicle driving on the wrong side of the road. He then traveled back eastbound and was eventually flagged down by another driver who told him the suspect vehicle was parked at the Family Dollar in Yah-ta-hey.
