Rio West Mall ‘Kids Fest’ goes to the ‘dog’

About 15 children gathered at the Rio West Mall July 18 to listen to dog care tips, including how to safely approach dogs. They applied those newly learned skills by petting Golden Retriever “Kahuna.”

Children finished the event by coloring photos of their pet, as seen in photos.

Quilts of Valor: Local vets honored for their service

“To cover veterans  with comfort and healing,” was the comforting words for this year’s presentation of Quilts of Valor for local veterans June 30, at the UNM-G North Adult Education Center.

The handmade quilts were made by the lady volunteers of the “Loyal Order of the Quilt.” Mayor Jackie McKinney proclaimed the last day of June as Proclamation of Quilts of Valor Day and gave a moving speech to honor these veterans.

Four Corners Rod Run to draw classic cars, crowds to historic downtown Farmington

FARMINGTON – The City of Farmington’s Parks, Recreation & Cultural Affairs’ Four Corners Rod Run hopes to draw thousands of people to historic downtown Farmington again this year on Saturday, July 15. Main Street will be closed from Auburn to Commercial from 11am to 8 pm, so that attendees can roam up and down the rows of classic cars and hot rods with ease.

The event will also feature vendors and live music all day where the Kirk James Blues Band finishing out the evening with their headline performance.

Local artisan Lyndon Tsosie holds stamp retreat

Lyndon Tsosie, local and internally renowned Navajo artist, held a retreat “House of Stamps,” the last week of June, for budding and experienced jewelry makers to learn about the art of Navajo stamping and to create their own masterpieces.

The Navajo silversmith stamping tools are handmade, and the stamping faces look clean and crisp, from 2 7/8” to 4 1/8” long.

Back in the day, Native Americans were resourceful, and made their tools from all kinds of found objects, such as rebar, old files, rasps, railroad spikes, and valve stems.
