Gallup, gallupArts receive $300K ‘Our Town’ grant

The city of Gallup, in partnership with gallupArts, received a $150,000 ‘Our Town’ grant last month from the National Endowment for the Arts. The grant was matched by $150,000 in contributions from local government, institutions and organizations, officials said.

The $300,000 grant total will fund a creative placemaking project in downtown Gallup. It will support a community-based, collaborative design process to re-imagine Coal Avenue as a signature “event street and commercial hub, gallupArts officials said.

Employment opportunities for everyone.

The Rio West Mall was once again host to the 5th Annual Veterans Job Fair June 21, in hopes of finding employment not only for local veterans, but as well to the public. The event was held from 10 am to 3 pm with over 26 employers on hand with local businesses showing their support for veterans.

Veterans Helping Veterans, organized the event along with help from, the Rio West Mall, Small Business Development Center, Millennium Media, Inc., Safeway, Comfort Suites, Walmart, Basha’s, Gurley Motor, Albertson, Rico Auto Complex, and many others.

Gallup, for a small city, gets its share of diverse concerts, whether it’s a Cuban jazz ensemble or a rock n’ roll gig and everything in between.

It was the fusion of blues and rock that hit the stage in the downtown area at the Gallup Downtown Conference Center this past week. Taking the stage June 8 was “Indigenous.” Indigenous is an American rock band that debuted in the late 1990s.

The band originally consisted of two brothers, Mato Nanji and Pte Nanji, their sister Wanbdi, and cousin Horse – all Yankton Sioux Native American Indians from the Nakota Nation, growing up on the Yankton Indian Reservation in South Dakota.
