Sun closes out another productive year
BERNALILLO, N.M. —The Gallup Sun won three awards at the 2017 New Mexico Press Association’s Better Newspaper Contest. The Sun is classified under the Weekly Class II category.
The awards ceremony, which was held at the Santa Ana Pueblo Hyatt Tamaya Resort, celebrated various newspapers from around the state.
Correspondent Bernie Dotson won a first place award for Sports Writing. Sun Editor and Publisher Babette Herrmann and former Editorial Assistant Mia Rose Poris won a second place award for news writing, and photographer Hawk Segura won an award for his “Nightly Indian Dances” photo.

Annual Gallup veterans event draws the community together

Patton’s words rang true for many in Gallup on Nov. 11, as families, friends and officials honored the veterans for their courageous service this past Veterans Day.
The city enjoyed a day of festivities, including a wreath ceremony, a parade downtown, and the placement of a United States flag to fly high over Gallup, which local veterans erected.

PED Secretary honors three ‘A’ grade district schools
Some months have passed since Del Norte elementary in north Gallup earned an A grade from the New Mexico Public Education Department.It is one of three schools in the Gallup McKinley County Schools district that received the stellar grade, based on a set of criteria from PED that schools must meet to earn the top grade.
Lincoln Elementary and Tse Yi Gai High School are the other two schools on the honor roll.

First Navajo, English language puppet show to launch film project
ALBUQUERQUE — It’s “Diné Naa’l kid Time!” and it’s the first-ever educational Navajo and English puppet television show created for an all-ages audience who want to learn the Navajo language. The title means Navajo Moving Pictures Time and will feature three characters Nanabah-a young girl, Gáh (Rabbit) and Dlǫ̀ǫ̀ (Prairie Dog) who will go on endless adventures learning about language, culture and the importance of family values.Filming begins on Nov. 4, at 8:15 am at the University of New Mexico’s Communications & Journalism Studio, Rm. 116, located at 2101 Central Ave. in Albuquerque.
