Diné College elementary education students honored at awards reception

TSAILE, Ariz. — The Center for Diné Teacher Education at Diné College honored five graduating seniors at an awards reception Dec. 8 at the college’s Ned Hatathli Museum. The event included student presentations and featured a brief musical recognition by CDTE instructor Blackhorse Mitchell.

Mitchell played renditions by the late blues musician Fats Domino. Navajo Nation Vice President Jonathan Nez was penciled-in as the guest speaker, but cancelled.

“They are all very wonderful and smart students,” Mitchell said. “They are hard-working and have already achieved success.”

Calling all ArtsCrawlers, artists, community members, business owners, musicians and creatives of all types! Everyone is invited to the 2nd Annual ArtsCrawl Community Brainstorm on Jan. 13th from 4:30 – 6:30 pm in the El Morro Events Center.

Be the first to hear the themes for 2018 and share your ideas for next year’s ArtsCrawl events in a series of speed brainstorming sessions. Help make the 2018 season the best yet.

The 1st annual Community Brainstorm involved over 50 people in generating hundreds of ideas for the event. In 2017, the ArtsCrawl team was able to implement over 50 community-contributed ideas, and they can’t wait to hear what everyone comes up with this year!

Navajo models host ‘meet and greet’ for Thunderbird Supply Company

Models for the Thunderbird Supply Company signed calendars and posters at the company’s flagship operation in Gallup on Dec. 2. The meet and greet was part of an effort to get Christmas shoppers into the store.

Founded in 1971, Thunderbird has been steadily supplying individual crafts people and manufacturers with raw materials to make the beautiful southwestern style jewelry that dominates the area.

General manager Danny Thomason has been with the company since 1978.

Thomason joked about his long association with Thunderbird.

“I guess I’m part of the original furniture,” he said.

Delegate Yazzie congratulates Navajo elders during the Churchrock Senior Center grand opening celebration

CHURCHROCK, N.M. – On Dec. 1, Council Delegate Edmund Yazzie (Churchrock, Iyanbito, Mariano Lake, Pinedale, Smith Lake, Thoreau) participated in the grand opening and ribbon cutting celebration for the Churchrock Senior Center, located approximately nine miles east of Gallup.

The newly constructed 5,500-square foot center features an administrative office, two activity areas, a dining room, two bathrooms with showers, a fully equipped kitchen with two pantries, craft storage, and a fireplace. The new center was constructed using the New Mexico capital outlay projects funding.
