President, vice-president honors his legacy

WINDOW ROCK, Ariz.—President Russell Begaye and Vice President Jonathan Nez offer their condolences to the family of Navajo Code Talker Samuel Tom Holiday, who passed away June 11 at age 94.

Born in Monument Valley, Utah, on June 2, 1924, Holiday served with the 4thMarine Division, 25th Regiment during World War II. Part of an elite group of Marines, Holiday sent and received coded messages as he served his country in Saipan, Iwo Jima, Tinian and Marshall Island, in the Pacific Theater.

Teaching the young strong traditional values from an early start has its benefits and that alone can go a long way.

Especially when it involves a language and a deep rich culture behind it. Such as the case with 27-year-old Alrye Polequaptewa, who was born and raised on the Hopi Reservation.

Polequaptewa has been involved with his culture from an early age. The Hopi Tribe sits atop three mesas in northern Arizona, with each one consisting of different villages.

Founders encourages Native poets to attend workshops

Pollentongue Summer Series will be taking over ART123 on the first Fridays this summer, a poetry workshop and reading event organized by Diné poets, Matthew Jake Skeets, coordinator from Vanderwagen, N.M. and Lemanuel Loley, co-coordinator, from Crownpoint, N.M.

The summer series kicked off June 1, with its first workshop following its featured Diné readers, Bojan Louis and myself, Boderra Joe. (Do I even mention myself, well yes, of course!)
