‘The Turquoise Trader: A Zia Yazzie Novel’ captures the sights, smells of Gallup

“The Turquoise Trader” is a New Mexico based novel that takes place in Gallup.

The main character is Zia Yazzie, the illegitimate son of a Navajo woman, and Ben Monroe, a Navajo Jewelry trader. Zia is a college student with big dreams of helping the Navajo people after his graduation from UNM.

Those dreams are interrupted by Ben’s sudden appearance after a 21 year absence. Zia wishes Ben would return to his “real” white family, while Zia’s mother remains silent. Throughout the novel she appears as a background decoration, much like the Navajo Jewelry that Ben trades and sells. Ben insists that Zia work for him in his Gallup shop.

Udall drops by Veterans Helping Veterans meeting March 25

Senator Tom Udall spent March 24 and the morning of March 25 at the Veterans Helping Veterans meeting at Don Diego’s. Veterans asked an assortment of questions, from legalizing recreational marijuana to what Udall is doing to help improve local VA services.

Local couple open second – and third businesses

It is often seen and reported on that busy people often look for more to do with their lives.

Johnny and Monica Greene are very good local examples of that belief.

Johnny retired as the Fire Chief for the Gallup Fire Department just three years ago but still had the time to operate, with his wife of 25 years Monica, Mr. Teez, a popular screen printing and embroidery shop. Monica is now the Marketing and Public Relations person at RMCHCS and Johnny, after moving Mr. Teez to a new location, has since purchased the Fluff and Fold Dry Cleaners and Leisure Laundry next door. The businesses are located behind Burger King on the Northside of Gallup.
