JoAnn B. Jayne, Chief Justice of the Navajo Nation, introduced herself to the 24th Navajo Nation Council during her quarterly report Jan. 28.Jayne is Tábąąhá, born for Kinyaa’áanii. She is from the community of Tohatchi and has been serving as the chief justice or Aląąjí Hashkééjí Nahatʹá since Jan. 24, 2018.
She told the Council that the Judicial Branch is looking forward to working with the new Council Delegates, Law and Order Committee, and the new President and Vice President.
Jayne said that the Judicial Branch is working toward the vision of resolving cases as soon as the courts can.

President, VP attend the Crystal, N.M. serviceA part of the dedicated U.S. Marine Navajo Code Talkers, whose language skills outwitted the Japanese during WWII, Alfred K. Newman was laid in Whiskey Creek, near Crystal, N.M., Jan. 19.
He was born on July 21, 1924, at Rehoboth Hospital in Gallup, N.M. and resided in Kirtland, N.M. He passed away at Bloomfield Nursing Home in Bloomfield, N.M. Code Talker Newman was Naaneesht’ézhi Dine’é (Zuni Clan) and born for Tsi’naajínii (Black Streak Wood People Clan).
Newman enlisted with the United States Marine Corps on March 26, 1943, at Fort Wingate and became part of the 1st Battalion, 21st Marine Regiment...
UNM-Gallup launches seminars for running, maintaining a business
Participants will receive entrepreneurial training and technical assistanceThe University of New Mexico-Gallup has partnered with STC.UNM and the Innovation Academy to provide an entrepreneurial seminar series for the spring 2019 semester.
These seminars will provide training and technical assistance at numerous UNM campuses and sites. The seminars will be free to the UNM community and the public, both in-person and online. Participants are required to register for the series.
The January seminar was held at UNM-G Jan. 18, and served as an introduction to the New Mexico Rainforest University Center Program and mentor, Gallup native Sandra Begay.

REHOBOTH, N.M. – Navajo Nation Vice President Myron Lizer was invited to Nikki VanSlooten’s sixth-grade class lecture to discuss the importance of tribal sovereignty, growth, and development at Rehoboth Christian School, located east of Gallup, N.M Jan. 30.Lizer discussed the significance of the “Long Walk” and the Navajo Treaty of 1868. In 1864, the Navajo people were forcefully removed from their homelands and forced to walk 300 miles to Bosque Redondo, N.M. The signing of the Treaty of 1868 allowed the Navajo people to return to their homelands and establish a government-to-government relationship with the U.S. government.
