CIBOLA COUNTY, N.M. – On Feb. 7, at approximately 11:53 am, the New Mexico State Police investigated a double fatal, two-vehicle crash on Interstate 40 eastbound near milepost 80, in Milan, N.M.



The initial investigation indicated a 2018 Dodge SUV, driven by Shannon Hosteen, 27, of Thoreau, N.M. was traveling east on Interstate 40. As the Dodge SUV approached traffic which was stopped due to another motor vehicle crash being investigated by Cibola County Sheriff’s Office. The Dodge SUV struck the rear end of a Commercial Motor Vehicle that was parked in the right lane on Interstate 40.

ALBUQUERQUE – Attorney General Hector Balderas announced Jan. 31 the successful prosecution of Edward Boysel, who fraudulently operated a concealed firearms training business while failing to report his income, and unlawfully receiving state benefits.

“For many, Medicaid and state benefits mean the difference between life and death, Balderas said. “My office aggressively prosecutes offenders who harm our most vulnerable New Mexicans by taking advantage of the system.”

Boysel pleaded guilty to five felony counts including Money Laundering, Tax Fraud, Medicaid Fraud, Falsification of Documents, and Failing to Disclose Facts to Obtain Public Assistance.

The Gallup City Council discussed a proposal to dedicate two baseball fields at Ford Canyon Park, 908 Buena Vista Ave, at the Jan. 22 regular meeting.

Mayor Jackie McKinney spoke for the item, which was proposed to the council in the aftermath of the passing of David “Amos” Schmaltz, a local youth baseball coach who died in November.

If passed, the Pee Wee Reese and Mickey Mantle Ball Fields would be rebranded the Field of Dreams in memory of Schmaltz.

In a memorandum to the council, McKinney spoke about how Schmaltz’s passion for baseball created an environment for teaching life skills to local youth on and off the field.
