A car accident on Interstate 40 left one person dead and several injured Dec. 23.

Around 7 am, New Mexico State Police responded to a one vehicle rollover crash near milepost 68 near Thoreau.

According to a NMSP press release, a 25-year-old woman named Ruth Cisneros was traveling westbound in her black Volvo when, for reasons still under investigation, she allegedly swerved onto the left shoulder and back onto the road before the car flipped and rolled several times. Cisneros was ejected from the car; the Office of Medical Investigator pronounced her dead at the scene.

Four other passengers, all children ranging from the age of 2 to 7 years old, sustained injuries and were taken to a hospital in Albuquerque. Their conditions are unknown at this time.

According to the press release, alcohol does not appear to be a factor in this crash, and it appears the driver and all the passengers were not wearing their seatbelts.

The New Mexico State Police are investigating this crash.
