A collision involving multiple semi-trucks and one pick-up truck stopped traffic on I-40 the evening of Sept. 13.

The Gallup Fire Department was advised of a motor collision involving three semi-trucks near mile marker 17 of Interstate 40 sometime after 3 pm.

Crew B arrived at the scene and located the semis in addition to one pickup truck. Fire department staff stated in a social media post that no hazardous materials leaked from the scene, and that one person had to be extracted from one of the vehicles. There was one reported death, but the person's identity was not available at press time.

The collision caused the westbound lane of I-40 to be closed and traffic diverted onto nearby side roads, causing delays and backups for several hours.

In addition to the fire department, Gallup Police Department, New Mexico State Police, and the New Mexico Department of Transportation participated in this multi-agency response.
