Aggravated DWI w/ Child in vehicle
A car crash resulted in the driver, Brittany Charley, 24, of Gallup, being arrested with a considerable list of charges.
A witness called Metro Dispatch stating there was a vehicle crash under the I-40 bridge near the intersection of Third Street and Maloney Avenue. Gallup Officer Warren Bowannie arrived at the scene and found the vehicle, a white Chevrolet Malibu with a temporary license plate and what the report identified as blood of unknown origin on the rear quarter panel.
Bowannie met two of the vehicle occupants and was told Charley had been driving at the time of the crash. She did not provide clear answers when Bowannie asked about the incident. After speaking with the pair, Bowannie checked inside the vehicle and found a young child inside. The child appeared uninjured but an ambulance was called.
Charley continued to be unclear as she spoke to Bowannie, who saw her display signs of intoxication including bloodshot eyes and swayed as she stood. The other occupant said they were drinking a bottle of Yukon Jack, but Charley said she consumed only four shots.
Paramedics arrived to check on Charley and the child, who was cleared and taken from the scene by an aunt. After Charley was cleared, she agreed to take the Standard Field Sobriety Tests. She performed poorly on the tests and was placed under arrest.
Bowannie transported Charley to Gallup Police Department for the breath test, where she posted two samples of .22. Another officer transported Charley to Gallup Indian Medical Center while Bowannie finished the booking paperwork. He was advised that Charley had an active arrest warrant out of McKinley County Magistrate Court for failing to appear.
After medical clearance was obtained, Bowannie transported Charley to McKinley County Adult Detention Center where she was booked for the magistrate warrant, aggravated DWI, DWI with a minor in the vehicle, failure to give immediate notice, having an open container in a vehicle, and no driver’s license. Her motion hearing is set for Aug. 30.
