On June 12 around 2 am, Gallup police officers were dispatched to 1511 Kit Carson in reference to a man who had been shot. One of the residents at the home, Andrew Martinez, 19, of Gallup, stated he had shot the man, who has yet to be identified, after he discovered him “snooping” in his yard.

Officers arrived on scene and discovered an unidentified male laying on a sidewalk near the residence. Officers saw that the male had a gunshot wound to his upper torso and believed that the man was dead. Medical personnel from the Gallup Fire Department arrived on scene and confirmed that the man was dead.

Officers searched Martinez’ residence and discovered an AK-47, believed to be the weapon used to shoot the male. During Martinez’ interview, he stated that he shot the male after he “popped out” and he fired a shot as a “reflex”.

Andrew Martinez was booked into the McKinley County Adult Detention Center on an open count of murder, a capital felony.
