Spelling champs hold their bees

The Gallup McKinley County Schools District Spelling Bee contest at Gallup High School on Jan. 19 featured 24 contestants, two from Thoreau Elementary, two from David Skeets Elementary, two from Red Rock Elementary, two from Tobe Turpen Elementary, two from Catherine A. Miller Elementary, two from Jefferson Elementary, two from Rehoboth Christian School, two from Del Norte Elementary, two from Navajo Elementary, three from Lincoln Elementary, one from Ramah Elementary and two from Chief Manuelito Middle School.

The three finalists came from only two of the schools — Chief Manuelito Middle School and Rehoboth Christian School.

They are Srikar Venigalla, an eighth-grader from Chief Manuelito Middle School, Jesse Benally, a sixth-grader from the same school and Caitlyn Bitsilly, a sixth-grader at Rehoboth Christian School.

Venigalla’s ambition is to become a software engineer. Benally wants to be a geologist and Bitsilly wants to be a doctor.
