Aggravated DWI w/ minor in vehicle
A brown Chevrolet Suburban covered in mud was the subject of a welfare check by McKinley County Sheriff’s Office, a check which led to the arrest of Sharon Peterson, 37, of Tse Bonito, N.M., for numerous charges including DWI with a child in her vehicle.
Metro Dispatch was advised of the vehicle located on Defiance Draw Road about two miles south of State Highway 264. Deputy Terence Willie traveled westbound to the scene and found a vehicle matching the caller’s description turning onto State Highway 264 west. The vehicle had no license plate and was swerving across the road. Willie pulled the vehicle over and conducted a traffic stop near mile marker 6.5.
Willie approached from the passenger side and saw a young child in the rear right seat before meeting the driver, Peterson, and asking her to exit the vehicle. As he spoke to her, Willie noted signs of intoxication including bloodshot eyes and a smell of alcohol on her person. Willie also saw two miniature shots of Fireball and a 16-oz. container of Bud Light on the floorboard.
Peterson told Willie she was traveling home from work and had consumed the alcohol in the containers in the vehicle about two hours prior to driving. She agreed to take the Standard Field Sobriety Tests, but performed poorly on each test. Peterson was placed under arrest and gave permission for her mother to pick up the child, who was unharmed, from the scene.
After receiving the breath test, Peterson was transported to the McKinley County Adult Detention Center and booked for aggravated DWI; no license, registration, or proof of insurance; failure to maintain lane; having an open container; and DWI with a minor in the vehicle. Her pre-trial hearing is set for Sept. 27.
