On June 25, around 10:30 pm, the McKinley County Sheriff’s Office was dispatched to the 63-mile marker Interstate 40 westbound, about 40 miles east of Gallup.

The caller reported a multiple vehicle collision with injuries and possible fatalities.

According to the sheriff’s office’s press release deputies learned there were 5 vehicles involved in the collision, two semi-trucks and three cars.

The investigation is still ongoing, but deputies believe the driver of one of the semi-trucks, who is not being identified at this time, was approaching a traffic backup due to a collision being handled in the construction zone up ahead.

The truck failed to slow down for slow moving traffic, and collided into the back end of a car, killing all three people who were inside it. The car was pushed into the back of a minivan causing injury to those inside. The minivan was then pushed into another car and then glanced off the front of another semi-truck before coming to a stop.
