Space Still Available for Vendors

The Grants MainStreet Project will present the inaugural 7 Trails of Gold Outdoor Festival in Fire and Ice Park June 3.

The family event runs from 9 am to 9 pm and will feature four geocaching trails around the area for adults and teens, an on-site scavenger hunt for the less adventurous, all-day children’s activities, two bands in the evening, food and crafts vendors, a raffle for a GPS and other prizes, and more.

Geocaching trails include levels from relaxed vehicle-oriented, one for horse-mounted adventurers, to a more strenuous mountain hike. Trail descriptions and event schedule are available on the Project’s website.

The University of New Mexico Acting Provost Craig White announced today that Dr. Christopher Dyer, chief executive officer of the UNM-Gallup Campus, will be stepping down from his current position effective immediately.

 

Dyer will remain at UNM-Gallup as a faculty member, beginning in fall semester of 2017, and will also pursue other professional initiatives.






Dyer joined UNM-Gallup as the top administrative officer on July 1, 2013.  Prior to that, he served as dean of academic affairs and tenured professor of anthropology at Missouri State University – White Plains.

Vote limits public comment

The Gallup-McKinley County Schools Board of Education put into place a time limit on how long members of the public can speak at school board meetings. The act took place at the May 15 regular Board of Education meeting at school district headquarters on Boardman Drive.

The vote to go to the change was 4-1. Kevin Mitchell, school board vice president, was opposed to the change, suggesting the move challenged openness and free dialogue.

The McKinley County Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a plan for improvements to Johnson Road. The act took place at the May 9 regular meeting and was met with enthusiasm from people who utilize the road.

Commissioner Bill Lee attended the meeting via telephone due to the fact that he was out of town. His comments were in favor of improvements. There was no immediate timeline or cost placed on the improvements.
