Madame G guide to the stars WEEK OF JUNE 2

E-mail Print PDF
The Sun is firmly in Gemini and today Venus conjuncts Uranus. You may feel, as if you have ants in your pants. The urge to move and wander may very well be overpowering. It’ll settle down on Sunday (a little). Madame recommends that you get outside and enjoy the pre-summer breeze. Take this time to enjoy yourself and spend...

Racial Reconciliation in Gallup

PART 2 of 2

Last week part one of an editorial on Racial Reconciliation was printed in the Gallup Sun.

At the end of Part One, I talked about my first experience with blatant racial stereotyping when I was 7 years old. When the little girl in the playground called me a “dirty rotten redskin” I don’t think she was born with that thought.  It was a learned way of thinking.  It is what children may see in the home when they grow up, what their peer groups practice, what they hear in music or see on other forums of life.

Part 1 of 2

Dear Editor:

With all the recent controversy regarding the removal of Larry Casuse memorial by the City, I have been thinking about whether to say anything or not.  I know “racism” is a touchy issue to talk about because most people like to believe it doesn’t exist anymore.

Anyway, it reminded me of a book I read in March of 2008 written by a man named Edward Gilbreath.  The book is called “Reconciliation Blues.”   He was writing about what he saw in the segment of society known as White Evangelical Christianity, which has had its share of problems with “integration”.

He told of how on his first Pastoral assignment he and his wife took an associate...

Madame G guide to the stars WEEK OF MAY 26

E-mail Print PDF
The Sun is in Gemini and a First Quarter Moon emerges on June 1. During the quarter moon phases, Madame G recommends rest and reflection in preparation for change. You may notice tempers flaring and drivers enacting creative driving. Take your time and don’t rush. Enjoy this season, remember we only have so many left. Honor the memory of those no longer present.

Aries (March 21-April 19)

You’re noticing changes within your own heart. Perhaps desires that seemed so insistent no longer bother you. Maybe you’re growing old. Maybe you’re growing up. Age is just a number. How you live your life intentionally is more important. Don’t give up your dreams. Allow your heart muscles...

I want to get off Gov. Martinez’s wild tax reform ride

E-mail Print PDF
This week lawmakers will meet for the second special session called in eight months. At a cost of $50,000 a day, and no formal agenda or tax plan presented by the administration, New Mexicans should feel like they are being taken for a ride.

Although Governor Susana Martinez has announced her priorities for the reconvening—the budget, comprehensive tax reform, and confirmation hearings for her university regents—the focus of this special session should be the budget.

Our universities have no state funding for their fiscal year, which begins in less than 40 days. In addition, thanks to her veto of the bipartisan revenue package, the state lacks about $156 million needed to pay for...
