Udall, Heinrich announce $344,325 to UNM to support Native American educators

WASHINGTON, D.C. – On Oct. 5, U.S. Senators Tom Udall and Martin Heinrich announced that the University of New Mexico will receive a $344,325 grant to provide training, licensing and induction services to Native Americans interested in pursuing a career in education.

The purpose of the grant is to train more highly qualified Native American teachers and administrators to serve Indian student populations throughout New Mexico. The grant was awarded through the Department of Education’s Office of Elementary and Secondary Education under the Indian Education Discretionary Grants Program.

New Mexico has had seven reported cases of Zika virus. Of those, all seven were in travelers who were infected abroad and diagnosed after they returned home.

The two mosquito species in the United States that can transmit Zika virus have been found in some parts of southern New Mexico. If a person gets infected with the virus while in an area with Zika virus transmission and then goes to a part of New Mexico where Aedes aegypti or Aedes albopictus mosquitoes are present, those mosquitoes could become infected with the virus by biting the infected person and could then spread the infection to other people they bite.

Former Gallup resident arrested in ABQ

A former Gallup resident was arrested Sept. 27 by the Albuquerque Police Department after an incident wherein he attempted to take a 2-year-old from her mother.

According to a complaint filed in Albuquerque District Court, Dustin Sherman, 29, was taken into custody after he tried to take the child from her mother, who was ultimately able to secure the child from Sherman.

Sherman, who has a long arrest record in and around Gallup, was jailed after residents in the Apache Elementary School neighborhood near Cooper Avenue saw Sherman looking in windows at the school and during school hours.

According to police records, Sherman relocated to Albuquerque...
