Wildcats won four games last year

CHINLE, Ariz. - Raul Mendoza is the new head boys’ basketball coach at Chinle High School, officials recently announced.

Mendoza, who previously coached the boys’ basketball team at Window Rock High School, takes over a Wildcats’ team that went 4-17, 0-11 Sectional, last year, but also a (Chinle) team that went 22-7 a year prior under then Head Coach Brandon Tso. Tso has since moved on to revive a Rough Rock boys team that featured superstar forward Devin Smith last tear.

The Fighting Scouts were 26-10, 8-4 Sectional, with Mendoza at the helm and advanced to state before losing to Scottsdale Christian Academy 54-34.

The Ninth Annual Bowl for Kids’ Sake event was held on May 30 at Gal-A-Bowl and was again a big success, according to Sarah Piano, the Regional Director for McKinley County of the Big Brothers, Big Sisters organization. The theme for this year’s event was 50’s Rock and Roll and the 46 teams entered raised a total of $33,872.88 and additional sponsorships brought in another $25,500. And more is still coming in to increase the total.

Considering the five agencies statewide raised $184,937 this year, Gallup’s share of almost 30 percent of that total is very telling. Truth is, this area always contributes well to a worthy cause!

Girl baller was part of epic 28-game Lady Bengals win streak

Ni’Asia McIntosh, a member of the girls basketball team at Gallup High School and one of best basketball players — girls or boys — to ever don a Bengals uniform, will be taking her talents to New Mexico Junior College come fall, officials confirmed.

Gallup High girls basketball coach Kamau Turner said McIntosh, a scoring and rebounding machine who stands 6-feet-tall and who played center for the Lady Bengals, signed a letter-of-intent to play for the Lady Thunderbirds last month at Gallup High School.

“We’re excited for her,” Turner said. “She is a very good and proven player.”

A very large crowd at Ford Canyon took on the clouds and threatening rain on May 7, with sunshine being the ultimate reward as the Miyamura Patriot girls’ team shut out Los Alamos in the opening round of the State Tournament, 11-0.

The boys’ games in Artesia were not so happy as they were beaten in the first two games of a best-of-three series, 2-0 on May 6 and 11-1 on May 7. The losses eliminated the sophomore-heavy team from further play this season.
