FORT DEFIANCE, Ariz. - The Monument Valley High School Mustangs played to practical perfection Oct. 7 and clobbered the Window Rock High School Fighting Scouts 64-6 in an Arizona 3A North football game at Window Rock Stadium in Fort Defiance, Ariz.

The Mustangs remain in the mix for a repeat run to the Arizona State playoffs. The team is undefeated this year and was undefeated at this point in the season last year, too.

The Mustangs opened the game by scoring on each of their first few possessions. Junior running back Billy Mitchell took it in from six yards out to give the Mustangs a 6-0 lead. The extra...

Bengals flat in second half

The Grants Pirates played Gallup relatively even in the first half, but came out in the second half and outscored the Bengals 26-0 to close out an Oct. 3 football game played at Gallup Public School Stadium.

“I’m proud of our team,” Pirates’ head coach Rio Thompson said. “We stuck together and came together on both offense and defense when we had to in the whole game.”

Gallup (2-4) took a 6-0 lead in the first quarter when junior quarterback Dominick Stewart found senior wide receiver Kevin Stewart on a 28-yard touchdown. The point after TD was not good, but the Bengals looked as though they were just getting warmed up.

91-yard record run makes ESPN highlight reel; UNLV history books

LAS VEGAS, Nevada - Dalton Sneed, the starting redshirt quarterback for the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, led the Rebels to a 45-20 win over Fresno State University Oct. 1 in a homecoming football game played at Sam Boyd Stadium in front of a little more than 17,000 fans.

Sneed, who is from Scottsdale, Ariz., is the grandson of Gallup Mayor Jackie McKinney. Sneed scored on a record 91-yard run midway through the third quarter — and the play made the ESPN Top 10 highlight reel after the game.

The run is the longest in school and stadium history, according to the sports information department at UNLV. The 6-foot...

Hawks hope to fly high in 4A

With a new coach in tow, the Thoreau Hawks hope to outdo themselves come Aug. 26, when they open the 2016 football season against the Tohatchi High School Cougars. The Hawks, who have 10 seniors on this season’s roster, beat the Cougars 32-16 last year in a game played at Tohatchi.

“We’re ready,” new Head Football Coach DeJong DeGroat said this week. “We have a great bunch of guys.”

DeGroat was the head volleyball coach last year at Thoreau. He was also an assistant coach in football under former Hawks Head Coach Roger Willie, who left the job after a 5-5, 3-2 season. Under Willie, Thoreau ran a single wing offensive scheme that featured the...
