Sandia High may have won their Nov. 30 non-conference game against the Gallup Bengals, 57-51, but the local team fought hard and had some great plays.

Girls, boys teams get new coaches

Officials at Gallup High School recently announced the hiring of James Voight as head boys basketball coach. The announcement was formally made by Gallup High Athletic Director James Malcolm.

Voight, who played basketball at New Mexico Junior College, was hired in August and participated in Gallup High’s “Orange and Black Mania” event on Nov. 11, which included “C” team, JV and varsity basketball scrimmages.

Voight is taking over for Richard Rangel, Jr., who resigned after coaching the Bengals for one year.

Pats to play Roswell in state playoff matchup

The No. 11 seeded Miyamura Patriots are hopeful in their state playoff game against Roswell this weekend. The Patriots defeated Goddard 28-26 on Nov. 11 and committed just one turnover the entire game against Goddard.

“To win this week we have to play error-free football,” Patriots’ head coach Wes Shank said. “Our defense stepped up last week. I have studied this Roswell team and you can’t make a lot of mistakes against this kind of team.”

Kirtland all over Gallup, 54-14

Bengals experience eighth straight loss

The Kirtland High School Broncos jumped out to a 2-0 first quarter lead and never looked back in defeating Gallup 54-14 in a District 1-5A football game played at Public School Stadium Nov. 4.

Kirtland junior quarterback Bryson Dowdy threw for two touchdowns and rushed for a third. Sophomore running back Jacob Franco of Kirtland racked up 107 yards on the ground and two touchdowns.

When the Kirtland took the big lead, Broncos’ head coach Greg Jenks inserted some second and third stringers so they could get some game experience.
