Running Time: 133 minutes

This film from Focus Features opens in Albuquerque on Friday, Nov. 10

I’ll be honest. For most, a film about a curmudgeonly teacher in a prep school filled with privileged students doesn’t sound like a particularly relatable or even entertaining cinematic experience. However, The Holdovers is quite a remarkable movie. The writing is so strong and the performances so compelling that the story does manage to involve viewers in the characters and their struggles. As a result, this surprising comedy/drama stands as one of the stronger efforts of the year.

The story takes place in 1971 and is set on the campus of Barton...

Rating: 2 out of 4

Running Time: 105 minutes

A lot of information has been delivered and recently there have been more and more references to T.V. programs in the movie franchise. Generally, this hasn’t been a big issue, but the latest film, The Marvels, is something of a head-scratcher in that a fine knowledge of the Disney+ shows Ms. Marvel and WandaVision appears vital to appreciating this effort.

As a reviewer walking into the picture cold, the...

Rating: 3 out of 4

Running Time: 100 minutes

This film from 20th Century Studios will be released in the United States via the streaming service Hulu on Friday, Nov. 3.

The long history of television game shows isn’t a particularly popular subject in cinema, even though witnessing an average person appear in front of millions in a high-stress situation would seem tailor-made for drama. There have been a couple of notable efforts, like the Oscar-nominated Quiz Show and Oscar-winner Slumdog Millionaire, but otherwise they are few and far between. The new comedy Quiz Lady certainly isn’t designed for awards consideration, but it delivers a cute and amusing little story about two...
