ART123 exhibit features 14 local artists

Stop and smell the metaphorical flowers at gallupARTS Oct. 13 through Nov. 6 with Art All Around Us. The show is composed of works by local artists and held at ART123 Gallery.

An opening reception will be held Oct. 13 from 7-9 pm.

Find the beauty in everyday objects, occurrences, landscapes and city scenes with the help of 40 pieces, ranging from painting to photography to collage to found object assemblage to sculpture to drawing by 14 local artists.

Artist urges youth to ‘be your truest self’

The auditorium in Calvin Hall at the University of New Mexico Gallup was filled Sept. 5 for an artist lecture by Douglas Miles, whose artwork is on display in the Ingham Chapman Gallery as part of the exhibit New Native American Art to Brighten Your Day, which runs through Sept. 24.

Miles, who hails from San Carlos, Ariz., may be known to locals as the founder of Apache Skateboards, which has operated for the past 15 years.

During the lecture, Miles said Apache Skateboards began as a personal project that caught the attention of the community and evolved into a business.

In his early days growing up in Wide Ruins, Ariz., Shawn Nelson learned how to focus on something he wanted to create, while sharing his perspectives and lessons learned through art.

These lessons were passed onto him through his grandparents, Albert and Gloria Nelson.

“They taught me how to respect the elders, respect people, introduce yourself,” Nelson said in an Aug. 28 interview. “[They taught me,] feel proud of who you are.”

Nelson was born in 1958 and lived in eastern Los Angeles, Calif., until 1963, when his family returned to New Mexico. He currently lives near Rock Springs.

When Mary Walker started teaching other people about weaving in 2006, she did not suspect her experience and lessons would lead her to establish a shop close to the Navajo Nation.

But exactly that happened in September 2017, when she opened Weaving in Beauty at 233 W. Coal Ave. The shop is dedicated to expanding the appreciation and knowledge of the textiles present in the southwestern United States, and offers cleaning, repair and appraisal of flat-woven textiles.
