Shiprock man pleads guilty to assault, federal firearms offense

A man from Shiprock, New Mexico pled guilty to multiple charges in November, including a federal firearms offense, after he shot into a car, injuring a woman. He also shot at the officers who responded to a call about the incident.

According to court records, on Oct. 11, 2022, 24-year-old Deon Joe Bidtah approached a vehicle near his residence in Shiprock and fired two rounds from a 12-gauge shotgun into it, hitting the woman who was driving the car and injuring her. The woman was taken to San Juan Regional Medical Center for treatment.

The Gallup Police Department is asking for the public's help in finding 16-year-old Leianah Bennett.

She is five feet and five inches tall, and weighs about 170 pounds. She has brown eyes and straight black hair with pink low highlights that falls to the middle of her back.

Bennett was reported missing Nov. 17. She was last seen around 8:30 am that day on the east side of Gallup. She was last seen wearing gray sweatpants, black Van shoes, and a black sweat jacket.

Anyone with any information on the whereabouts of Leianah Bennett is asked to contact Det. Tasheena Wilson or Metro Dispatch at (505) 722-2002.

The Gallup Police Department is asking for people's help in locating Shania Charley, 18.

She is five feet and six inches tall, and weighs about 164 pounds. She has brown eyes and black hair. She was last seen wearing a black hoodie, torn blue jeans, and white shoes. She may be with an unknown man.

She was last seen Dec. 3 around 7 pm at 3309 Churckrock St.

Missing in New Mexico Day to provide resources for relatives of missing Indigenous people

ALBUQUERQUE — The New Mexico Department of Public Safety and Indian Affairs Department invite families and loved ones of Missing and Murdered Indigenous People to the second annual Missing in New Mexico Day on Dec. 3. The day-long event established through legislation signed by Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham last year brings together law enforcement, forensic, medical, and social service partners to provide resources for families, friends, and loved one of MMIP.

The free public event is scheduled from 9 am to 3 pm at the Embassy Suites, 1000 Woodward Place NE, in Albuquerque.
