An unscheduled water outage that is affecting multiple areas of Gallup started at 5 am Jan. 9 and will last until 5 pm.

The outage is affecting City of Gallup Water customers in the following areas:

Public Works Departments begins to clear snow

In a Jan. 8 post on Facebook the City of Gallup provided an update for citizens about the city's road conditions and the Public Works Department's efforts to clear them.

The Public Works Department will be plowing Priority 1 and Priority 2 roads today, Jan. 8. They will work on Priority 3 and 4 roads on Jan. 9. The city asks for the public's patience as drivers work to clear the roads.

When it snows, the City of Gallup Public Works Department has about 235 miles of roadways to keep clear. There are 12 employees who plow snow using four plow trucks. The snow plow drivers are only allowed to work one 12-hour shift each day, so the crew is split in half during active snowstorms.

Winter weather increases cold-related illness, safety concerns

SANTA FE — The New Mexico Department of Health reminds residents ongoing winter weather in some parts of the state over the next few days can pose health risks and cold related illnesses. From Oct. 1 to Jan. 5 there have been over 400 cold-related emergency department visits statewide and five deaths reported.

The National Weather Service forecasts in the days ahead blizzard-type conditions as possible in northern areas and higher elevations with snow and blowing snow, and high winds that will drop temperatures statewide.

Nygren proclaims Jan. 5 a Day of Remembrance in honor of Klee Benally

WINDOW ROCK, Ariz. — Navajo Nation President Buu Nygren has proclaimed Jan. 5 as a Day of Remembrance in honor and recognition of Navajo author, musician, silversmith and activist Klee Benally, who died Dec. 30. He was 48.

In his proclamation, the President said the Navajo Nation mourns the loss of Klee, who grew up in Big Mountain on the Navajo Nation, and whose family was impacted by the 1974 Navajo-Hopi Relocation Act.

His parents are Berta and Jones Benally.

Budget Committee seeks solutions to expedite financial assistance for Navajo veterans

WINDOW ROCK, Ariz — The 25th Navajo Nation Council’s Budget and Finance Committee received a report from the Navajo Nation Veterans Administration regarding challenges that hinder veteran’s assistance payments from being processed on a timely basis on Jan. 2.

“As chairwoman of the Budget and Finance Committee, I’d like to reassure our Navajo veterans that the Committee is looking into these issues and challenges because we’re not hearing any communication from the Navajo Nation Veterans Administration on these issues,” BFC Chair Shaandiin Parrish (Chilchinbeto, Dennehotso, Kayenta) said.
