Man who shot, killed NMSP officer identified

A New Mexico State Police Officer was shot and killed during a traffic stop on Interstate 40 during the early morning hours of March 15. The suspect has now been identified Jaremy Smith, and there is a warrant out for his arrest.

Smith is 32 years old and is from Marion, South Carolina.

He is facing charges of first degree murder, armed robbery, shooting from a motor vehicle, tampering with evidence, felon in possession of a firearm, unlawful taking of a motor vehicle, and criminal damage to property.

Smith is considered armed and dangerous and should not be approached.  If seen, call the New Mexico State Police at (505) 425-6771 or dial 911.
