SANTA FE — Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham signed HB 171 into law, a bill that updates high school graduation requirements in New Mexico for the first time in over a decade, on Feb. 10.

“High school should be about preparing students for the real world while providing more opportunities to pursue their unique interests and future careers,” the governor said. “These changes will lead to more young New Mexicans staying engaged in school, graduating, and continuing that success in their adult lives.”

Rehoboth Christian students raise Almost  $12,000 for pet project

Not all of life’s lessons can be learned in a classroom, but there is often overlap. A perfect example is a student project at Rehoboth Christian High School to build a community common area for the campus.

The idea started with geometry teacher Emily Wuestwald. She made a point of taking her classes outside “to look at what’s been given to us and [how to] bring beauty to it, but also find beauty in what’s there.”

Parts of East Aztec Avenue will be closed from 5 pm on Feb. 20 to 8 am on Feb. 21 while the City of Gallup makes some necessary electrical repairs.

The affected area is East Aztec Avenue between Will Street and Verdi Drive.

Surrounding areas may be affected.

Navajo Nation Council meets with New York congressman to discuss voting issues

TSE BONITO, New Mexico — The 25th Navajo Nation Council met with U.S. Congressman Joseph Morelle, D-NY, to discuss concerns and recommendations regarding voting and elections issues to build the congressional record in support of the Native American Voting Rights Act on Feb. 19.

Navajo Nation Council Speaker Crystalyne Curley (Tachee/Blue Gap, Many Farms, Nazlini, Tselani/Cottonwood, Low Mountain) provided testimony that focused on areas of geographic distance, language and institutional barriers, and socio-economic realities. Curley discussed how issues like public transportation, rural addressing, and out of precinct voting have impacted Navajo voters.
