Navajo Nation Gaming Enterprise begins layoffs

The Navajo Nation Gaming Enterprise announced, it has been forced to temporarily layoff 1,120 team members, 776 of whom are Navajo tribal members.

In early November, NNGE leadership had warned about the possibility of layoffs. (See Gallup Sun VOL. 6, ISSUE 294, Nov. 13, 2020)

Shooting at El Rancho Hotel

Around 6:30 pm on Dec. 30, Gallup police officers in the area of the El Rancho Hotel heard the sound of numerous gunshots.

They saw a man reloading a firearm and ordered him onto the ground, where he was handcuffed. They determined that he had been shot in his right torso and they began rendering medical aid.

On further investigation, they determined the man they handcuffed had been firing at two people in the parking lot of the hotel.

Those two people were also armed and returned fire.

Before officers could determine their involvement, the two entered a white newer-model extended cab Toyota Tundra and fled the scene.

Leaders focus on solutions

A brainstorming group meeting to improve the quality of life in Downtown Gallup, has been gathering every couple of weeks since October to address some of the city’s more stubborn challenges.

Francis Bee, executive director of the Gallup Business Improvement District is one member of the group.

He talked to the Gallup Sun, Dec. 15 about Gallup’s downtown struggles with the numerous people who visit to do business and find themselves unable to get home.

Legal nonprofit seeks to help prisoners in Gallup, across state

The New Mexico Prison & Jail Project announced its intention to sue the New Mexico Corrections Department for alleged violations of the state’s Inspection of Public Records Act on the same day it launched, Dec. 10.

NMP&J Project was created to provide more lawyers to help the state’s prison population.

The group’s first piece of litigation alleges the corrections department failed to follow IPRA, and asks for previously requested records, which include documentation on whether the agency made policy changes in determining what constitutes an exemption to public records.
