Gallup’s Wayne Lufkins follows family into service

An elite, tight-knit group of airmen compose the United States Air Force Honor Guard, among them Gallup’s own Wayne Lufkins. Lufkins is the son of recently elected Eleventh Judicial District Attorney Bernadine Martin.

“We’re all so proud of him,” Martin told the Sun. “Wayne comes from a long line of veterans. His grandfather served in the Korean War as a paratrooper.

“His grandpa George Willie was a Code Talker. He has numerous cousins and uncles that have served since World War II,” Martin said.

Fire damages local auto repair shop

Gallup firefighters battled a blaze Oct. 18 at FASSCO Auto Repair, 105 Mine Run St.

Fire Deputy Chief Nathan Emerson said the call came in around 3:11 pm and all stations within the city responded, as well as off-duty firefighters.

Emerson explained that there was an explosion at the repair shop, and it took until sometime between 6:30 pm and 7 pm to extinguish all of the hotspots in the area.

He described the roof of the body shop as compromised, and the building itself as "totaled." He also said there were two vehicles parked in the two bays inside the repair shop that may have escaped fire damage.

The nearby Burger King was advised to shut down due to smoke. It has since reopened...

Motorcycle crash kills 82-year-old man

CIBOLA COUNTY — The New Mexico State Police was alerted about a motorcycle crash on BIA Road 125 near Milepost 2, south of Ramah on Oct. 16 around 5 pm.

The initial investigation showed that a 2017 Kawasaki motorcycle being driven by George W. McBeath, 82, of Pinehill, N.M., left the roadway and crashed.

McBeath, who was wearing a helmet, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Alcohol was not a factor in this incident.

The crash is under investigation by the New Mexico State Police.

Enrolled member of Navajo nation charged with murder

An enrolled member of the Navajo Nation was charged Oct. 4 in federal court with a killing in Indian Country. Quinten Smith, 21, of Mexican Springs, N.M. will remain in custody pending trial.

According to a criminal complaint, Smith and others went to the home of the victim, identified as John Doe, on Sept. 24. They wanted to confront him. When they arrived, a physical altercation is said to have begun. During the fight, Smith allegedly stabbed the victim multiple times in the back using a pocketknife. Smith and the others are believed to have fled the scene.

Doe, also an enrolled member of the Navajo Nation, and who lived on the Navajo Nation, was found dead at his home.
