Hyatt weighs in on court of public opinion

It’s been over a month since Gallup High seniors snuck into their high school on the night of March 31, decorating the school’s commons and the principal’s office with streamers, balloons, signs, and glitter, among other things.

A lot has happened since then.

According to a criminal complaint filed by the Gallup Police, a surveillance video showed 26 people were involved in the prank. The Gallup McKinley County Schools investigation identified 25 of those people, and those students were suspended.

The cavalry may be coming to help Rehoboth McKinley Christian Health Care Services free up between $2.5 million and $3 million of federal funding held up in bureaucracy.

“I talked to the governor yesterday, and she said she would assist us with what the holdup is,” McKinley County Commissioner Billy Moore said after a special meeting of the county commissioners May 4.

Plans for a new Red Rock Elementary building in the works

Red Rock Elementary was built in 1966, and now, almost 60 years later, a new building will soon replace it.

During the May 2 Gallup McKinley County Schools Board of Education meeting, GMCS Assistant Superintendent of Businesses Services Jvanna Hanks III told the board about the updates.

First though, she explained how a school gets selected for a remodel.

“The district is really not able select the schools that we renovate,” Hanks said. “The renovation is based on a New Mexico state formula. It tells us where our schools are in comparison to the rest of the schools evaluated in the state.”

THREATENED WITH A GUN

Gallup, April 21

A couple on a leisure walk encountered a scary situation when a man pulled a gun on them, after nearly striking the duo with his car.

On April 21, Gallup Police Officers Ryan Boucher, Christopher Dawes, Jarad Albert, and Lt. Mark Spencer were dispatched to the Larry Brian Mitchell Recreation Center, 400 Marguerite Franco Dr., in response to a report that a man had a gun.

When Boucher arrived around 2:55 pm, Dawes informed him that Richard Nolasco, 27, from Gamerco, had a gun in his car.
