Albuquerque — The New Mexico Veterans Memorial board has announced the memorial’s video contest to encourage elementary, middle and high school students to honor a veteran. Titled “What a Veteran Means to Me,” challenges students to create a one-minute video that tells the story about an important veteran in their life. Adults are also invited to submit videos; however, these will not be judged in the student video contest.

Meet Camille’s Teacher of the Month: Aurelio Culling

Each month, Camille’s Sidewalk Cafe recognizes one local teacher within the Gallup area for his or her determination to help students go above and beyond. Prospective teachers are nominated by students who feel they deserve to be recognized.

Aurelio Culling, of Sacred Heart Catholic School, has taught in Gallup for about 13 years and spoke about the bonds he has formed with students in that time.

LAS CRUCES — The New Mexico Department of Agriculture and New Mexico State Fair are partnering to host a virtual Battle of the Salsas, one of the most popular events at the fair.

The Battle of the Salsas is a competition for New Mexico-made and commercially-produced shelf-stable salsas available for sale in the New Mexico Country Store. The Country Store was created 25 years ago as a place to discover New Mexico foods, such as salsas and other chile products including chips, spice mixes, baked goods, jams and jellies, candies, ciders, nuts and much more.

The Boys & Girls Club of Gallup teamed up with Panda Express Aug. 6 for Panda Cares Day at the Boys & Girls Club parking lot (416 W. Princeton Ave.).

The packs were handed out by club staff and a Panda Express manager, observing CDC and state health guidelines.

They handed out Panda Cares Packs and activity/enrichment bags to club members.

The Panda Cares Pack contained three books, a child-sized face mask, stickers and a packaged Panda Express lunch.

The Boys & Girls Club bag included games, a sweet treat and kids’ meal coupons from local restaurants.
