Show features five different artists covering five social justice topics

When a multitude of artists applied for the Guest Curated shows at gallupart123, Executive Director Rose Eason knew something had to be done in order to honor as many of the great artists as possible. That’s why she and the committee in charge of Guest Curated shows decided to do four shows with induvial artists, and then save a fifth show for multiple artists.

That’s how “BeCause” came to be. “BeCause” features five different artists, and each of them is exploring a social justice topic that is important to them.

Frankie T’s gives back with dozens of free haircuts, backpacks

About 50 lucky youngsters look sharp going into the new school year, thanks to a free haircut and backpack event at Frankie T’s Barbershop on Aug. 13.

Owner Frankie Tso had a similar event when he first opened in 2019. Then COVID struck and he had to close up shop until late last year.

Wary of COVID, he was hesitant to do an event this year. Then he overheard a conversation between a mother and son at Walmart. The boy wanted a haircut, but his mother said, “No, we can’t afford that now. We have to buy school supplies.”

Landmark celebration features virtual, in-person events

A global pandemic pushed the big celebration back one year, but the Gallup Inter-Tribal Indian Ceremonial, founded in 1921, will commemorate its 100th show from Aug. 4-14.

This year’s show carries a particularly special aura due to the centennial, which the Gallup Inter-Tribal Ceremonial Board wants to convey through the events and the culture and history on display.
